A factory acceptance test (FAT) is a structured check of equipment at the manufacturer's factory, before shipment. For overhead conveyors, it typically covers drives, switches, stops, lifts, carriers and control panels that can be assembled and run in the workshop.
FAT vs SAT
| Factory acceptance test (FAT) | Site acceptance test (SAT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Manufacturer's factory | Your plant |
| When | Before shipment | After installation and commissioning |
| What | Function of key assemblies and panels | Whole line at the agreed output |
| Goal | Find defects before shipping | Confirm the line meets the contract |
Prepare the FAT
- Agree a written test procedure with pass criteria before the test
- Agree which assemblies are pre-assembled and run
- Prepare test products or dummies with the right weight
- Decide who attends, in person or by video
- Prepare a punch list template for open points
What to test
| Item | Checks |
|---|---|
| Drives | Smooth running, direction, current draw, overload protection |
| Switches | Correct switching in both directions, end-position sensors |
| Stops | Holding and release, sensor feedback, accumulation behaviour |
| Lifts and drop sections | Travel, positioning, brakes and safety catches |
| Carriers | Dimensions, locating points, fit with test product, welds |
| Control panels | Wiring check, I/O test, PLC program functions, HMI screens |
| Safety | Emergency stops, interlocks and guards |
| Documents | Drawings, wiring diagrams, manuals, spare parts list, certificates |
Video FAT
When travel is not practical, a live video FAT works well if it is prepared: a written test plan, a camera operator who follows instructions, close-ups of measurements and HMI screens, and a recording for the project file.
After the FAT
- Sign the FAT report with results and open points
- Agree dates for closing each punch list item
- Approve packing only when critical points are closed
- Link the shipment payment milestone to the signed FAT report
Then the SAT
The site acceptance test usually includes running the line at the agreed output for an agreed period. Define this in the contract. See our installation guide for the steps before SAT.
Customers are welcome to inspect their equipment at HITREE before shipment; see factory and quality or contact us.
Sample FAT test sheet
| Test | Method | Pass criterion |
|---|---|---|
| Switch function | Cycle each switch 20 times in both directions | No missed end-position signal |
| Stop function | Hold and release a loaded carrier 20 times | Carrier disengages and re-engages every time |
| Lift | Raise and lower with rated load | Positions within tolerance; brake holds |
| Emergency stop | Activate each E-stop | All motion stops; reset works as specified |
| HMI | Check each screen and alarm | Matches the approved specification |
Example only; your test procedure should match the contract and the equipment.
Common FAT mistakes
- No agreed pass criteria before the test
- Testing without load, so issues appear only on site
- Skipping documentation checks
- Signing without a dated punch list
A thorough conveyor factory acceptance test takes a little extra time before shipping and can save weeks on site.
